Tuesday marks the 26th anniversary of the bonfire tragedy at Texas A&M. Everyone knows about the magnificent Bonfire Memorial on campus, but did you know another set of memorials is located in  College Station's beautiful Brison Park?

In this week's episode of "What's Up, College Station?," Recreation Supervisor Kohl Vega dives into the City’s youth basketball league, the need for volunteer coaches, and how sports participation teaches kids valuable life lessons.

Whether a youngster is taking their first dribble or already sinking deep three-pointers, Parks and Recreation’s Winter Youth Basketball League is ideal for new or experienced players from 6-13 years old. Registration ends Dec. 1 and practices start in early January. We need volunteer coaches, too!

For 35 years, jingling bells and running shoes have kicked off the holidays in College Station, but this year’s Jingle Bell Fun Run is taking a new path. College Station Parks and Recreation is introducing a 1.5-mile course that adds a fresh spin to our holiday tradition.

The Parks and Recreation Department’s popular Lick Creek Park in the Dark events are family-friendly overnight campouts that help you escape the city lights in our premier nature preserve. The campouts are set for Friday, Nov. 7, and Friday, Nov. 14, with activities starting at 6 p.m.

Do you spend too many hours with your eyes glued to digital screens? Maybe it’s time to log off and step outside. The College Station Parks and Recreation Department encourages residents to power down their devices and enjoy the outdoors on Unplug Texas Day on Tuesday, Oct. 21.

If you’re looking for something different this Halloween season, College Station Parks and Recreation offers more than traditional trick-or-treating. This year’s festivities have something for everyone, from a festival exclusively for seniors to the Annual Fall Fest and Haunted House the whole family can enjoy.

The ribbon-cutting ceremony for the City of College Station's new Parks Operations Shop is on Wednesday, Oct. 1, at 11:30 a.m. at Stephen C. Beachy Central Park.
