Rain barrels are an excellent way to make rainwater do “double duty” for you. In fact, from a 2,000 square-foot roof, you can collect approximately 1,000 gallons of rainwater after a one-inch rain! Collecting rainwater in barrels is a great way to water your landscape, while saving on your water bill.
RAIN BARRELS ARE EXEMPT FROM SALES TAX
As an added benefit, now when you buy your rain barrel, you no longer have to pay sales tax! The Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts has made rain barrels exempt from sales tax because they are used for water conservation. To qualify for the exemption, purchasers will need to have a
Texas Sales and Use Tax Exemption Certification Form (Form 01-339) when making the purchase.
TIPS
If you purchase a translucent barrel, it will need to be painted in a dark color to prevent the growth of algae.
Don't forget to screen the opening to your barrel to restrict access by children and animals, and prevent mosquitoes.
