The City of College Station’s Internal Auditor's Office has been awarded a 2024 Exemplary Knighton Award for the best performance audit among local government audit organizations of similar size in the U.S. and Canada.

The national award from the Association of Local Government Auditors recognizes excellence in local government performance audits among over 300 member organizations. The City of College Station’s Internal Auditor’s Office has received five Knighton Awards since 2015.

College Station’s “Segregation of Duties within ERP Role-Based Access” report was specifically cited for its potential for significant impact, the persuasiveness of its conclusions, a focus on improving government efficiency and effectiveness, and clarity and conciseness.

A summary of the judges’ evaluation stated: “The audit made segregation of duties an accessible topic for readers while underscoring the risks of ineffective controls. The report’s one-page executive summary and presentation of recommendations with risk scores helped communicate the significance of the findings. The audit team appears to have put extensive effort into explaining key terms, roles, and scenarios that created risk, and distilling concepts into helpful visual aids.

Judges found that the level of detail provided in the report allowed for the conclusions to align with scope and objectives throughout the report. Also, the report layout—including the use of colored headers, figures, and bolded font—was effective in drawing the reader’s attention. Overall, the judges found this to be an impactful, clearly laid out report that should be recognized for making what can be a dense topic into something policymakers and the public could easily understand.”

Each year, local government audit organizations from around the U.S. and Canada submit their best performance audit reports for judging in the Knighton Awards program. The purpose of the competition is to enhance government services by promoting and elevating the standards of excellence among local government auditors. Knighton Awards are given at the Exemplary and Distinguished levels.

The Association of Local Government Auditors is a national audit association founded in 1985. It is committed to supporting and improving local government auditing through advocacy, collaboration, education, and training while upholding and promoting the highest standards of professional ethics.
