A Certificate of Occupancy (CO) is the document that allows the legal occupancy of a building. A CO is issued after all final building inspections, as well as inspections from other City Departments, are complete and the building or structure is ready for occupancy.
For multi-family and commercial projects the structure must be inspected by building, planning, engineering, fire, electrical, sanitation, environmental services and drainage prior to the issuance of a CO. Click here to see a checklist of some standard items which will need to be addressed prior to approval from these departments, as well as contact information to schedule those inspections. This list is intended as a general overview only. For more detailed information regarding this process, please contact Brian Binford, Building Official at [email protected] or call 979.764.3570
A CO for an existing building may also be obtained by contacting the Planning & Development Services Building Division at 979.764.3570.
