Council to consider calling Aug. 18 election

City Council to consider calling Aug. 18 special election to fill Place-4 vacancy
Posted on 05/30/2020
The College Station City Council will gather Monday by teleconference for a special meeting (6:30 p.m.) to consider one item: Adoption of an ordinance calling for an Aug. 18 special runoff election to fill Place-4 on the council.

Place-4 has been vacant since the December 2019 announcement by then-Councilwoman Elianor Vessali that she would resign her seat in order to campaign for the Republican nomination for U.S. Congressional Dist. 17.

A Jan. 28 special election to fill Place-4 did not produce an outright winner, so a runoff election between candidates Elizabeth Cunha and Joe Guerra, Jr. was scheduled to take place April 18. Due to the effects of the coronavirus, that runoff election was postponed.

The city council directed staff in the spring to seek permission from the state of Texas to reschedule the Place-4 runoff election for Aug. 18. While this request is still pending, Monday's action would permit the city to seek court approval to proceed with the election.
