    JUNETEENTH CELEBRATIONS

Juneteenth is the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the end of slavery in the United States, and since it started in Texas, we should proudly proclaim it as uniquely ours.

    JUNETEENTH FREEDOM WALK
The legacy walk around the Lincoln Recreation Center and W.A. Tarrow Park commemorates Juneteenth, the oldest known celebration of the end of slavery in the United States. On June 19, 1865, Union soldiers led by Maj. Gen. Gordon Granger landed in Galveston with news the war was over, and the enslaved were free. Storytelling immediately follows the walk.
