We offer a variety of senior programming for ages 55+ at three facilities within College Station. The Lincoln Recreation Center, Meyer Senior and Community Center, and Southwood Community Center serve as a gathering space to participate in fun activities such as line dancing, arts and crafts, book club, and more. 

WINTER & SPRING SCHEDULE

    MEMBERSHIPS
    Memberships are for ages 55 and older and can be used for senior programming at the Meyer Senior and Community Center, Southwood Community Center, and the Lincoln Recreation Center. Memberships can be purchased in person at the facilities or by calling 979.764.2670 and are good for one calendar year from the date of purchase. Programs marked "membership" are free to those with a facility membership.

    FITNESS CENTER & WALKING 

    Use the treadmill or elliptical or get your steps in by walking outdoors under the covered pavilion while listening to oldies music. The fitness center has cardio machines, a weight-training circuit, single-station machines, and free-weight equipment such as benches, barbells, and dumbbells. Enjoy the fitness center by registering as a senior member.

    Rummikub is a 2-4 player game that combines elements of the card game rummy and the tile game mahjong. Players create groups and runs of numbers using high-quality, durable tiles. The fun-loving group of seniors is always looking for new players.

    Intermediate Line Dancing is for dancers that want to challenge their ability or get in another hour of line dancing. Previous experience and knowledge of basic line dancing steps are required.

    Mah Jongg is a game of strategy, skill, and calculation. Learn the basics with skilled players.

    LEARN TO PLAY TEXAS HOLD’EM POKER

    Become a pro at this classic card game through weekly educational sessions with seasoned players.

    INTERMEDIATE TAI CHI

    The Yang-style Tai Chi class teaches students advanced skills and forms not included at the beginner level. Ideal students will already have mastered basic skills and know Yang Form 16. The intermediate level focuses on longer forms and perfecting skills from the beginner-level class. The instructor assesses potential participants to ensure placement at the proper level based on skills and experience.

    BEGINNER TAI CHI

    The entry-level Yang-style Tai Chi course is designed for students of various skill levels. More knowledgeable students learn Form 16, while beginners focus on foundational movements until they can join more experienced students in Form 16. The course material covers balance and flexibility improvement, movement guidelines applicable to all Tai Chi styles, and Yang-style Tai Chi movements, which can be adapted if a participant has physical limitations.

    LEARN TO PLAY 42
    Become a pro at this classic domino game through weekly educational sessions with seasoned players.

    Shanghai is a card game based on gin rummy and a variation of contract rummy played with 3-8 players. It's also known as California rummy. The new program welcomes all players or those wishing to learn.

    Learn to make basic earrings, bracelets, and necklaces, or repair broken jewelry. Instructors Joe, Linda, and Betty offer expertise and guidance. Participants are encouraged to bring beads.

    The Brazos Valley Wearable Arts Organization aims to enhance our abilities in wearable art by providing a forum for members to learn, critique, and share ideas in an informal setting. We also bring in outside experts to expand our knowledge and provide an outlet for members. We have monthly meetings with planned programs, and visitors are welcome.

Instructor Jose Aponte has 28 years of uninterrupted training and experience in ITF taekwondo and is a sixth-degree black belt by the International Taekwondo Federation.

    QUILTING BASICS • RSVP BY OCT. 15
    The six-week program offers individuals with little to no experience in quilting the chance to learn and practice machine quilting techniques. The covered skills include fabric selection, rotary cutting, piecing, quilting, binding, and more. Specialized quilting tools will be provided. Participants can choose to use the provided fabric or purchase their own for completing quilted projects based on traditional pieced quilt block patterns. Completed projects will encompass hot pads, placemats, and a multi-block design suitable for use as a table runner or centerpiece/wall hanging. Participants are required to bring sewing machines in good working condition and basic sewing supplies like thread, scissors, pins, etc. Space is limited. There will be no class on Nov. 22.     LINE DANCE PARTY
    Showcase the dances you've learned in the Beginner, Advanced Beginner, Intermediate I, and Intermediate II Line Dancing classes and learn new dances from our three instructors. Bring your favorite dish and enjoy a potluck lunch after a morning full of dancing. Please note that there will be no Beginning Line Dance or Intermediate Line Dancing II classes before the party.

If you're uncertain about enrollment timing or methods, your available choices, and the process of selecting suitable options for your needs, this is the ideal venue for you. We provide straightforward information devoid of unnecessary details. A Q&A session will follow the meeting.

    EXPLORING HISTORY LUNCHEONS • REGISTRATION ENDS FRIDAY BEFORE LUNCHEON
    The Historic Preservation Committee and Parks and Recreation Department present monthly lectures about our community's history. Attendance is free, but lunch is $10 per person. Lunch reservations are required by the Friday before the luncheon. You can reserve your lunch online, by calling 979.764.3486 or by visiting a parks facility. Payment is required at registration.
