We offer a variety of senior programming for ages 55+ at three facilities within College Station. The Lincoln Recreation Center, Meyer Senior and Community Center, and Southwood Community Center serve as a gathering space to participate in fun activities such as line dancing, arts and crafts, book club, and more. 

SUMMER SCHEDULE

    MEMBERSHIPS
    Memberships may be used for senior programming at the Southwood Community Center, Meyer Senior and Community Center, and the Lincoln Recreation Center. Memberships are good for one calendar year from the date of purchase. Programs marked “membership” are free with a senior membership.

    FITNESS CENTER & WALKING TO OLDIES
    Use the treadmill or elliptical or get your steps in by walking outdoors under the covered pavilion while listening to oldies music. The fitness center is equipped with cardio machines, a weight training circuit, single-station machines, and free-weight equipment, including benches, barbells, and dumbbells.

    Our circle of creative crafters preserves memories in a fun and creative way. Participants must bring supplies.

    The class is specially designed to encourage healthy lifestyle practices. Exercises accommodate all abilities and focus on building strength, balance, and endurance.

    Play the national game of Texas, 42 dominoes. Novices and experienced players alike enjoy the trick-taking game.

    For dancers that want to challenge their ability or get in another hour of line dancing. Previous experience and knowledge of basic line dancing are steps required.

    The gentle exercise features fat-burning aerobics and weightlifting using a chair for support.

    RUMMIKUB

    Rummikub is a 2-4 player game that combines elements of the card game rummy and the tile game mahjong. Players create groups and runs of numbers using high-quality, durable tiles. The fun group of seniors is always looking for new players.

    CLASSIC COUNTRY & BLUEGRASS JAM SESSION
    All musicians, regardless of experience level, are invited to participate. Country and bluegrass music fans are also welcome.

    HAND & FOOT CANASTA
    Learn a fun card game enjoyable for all levels of players.

    TAI CHI
    The class is an entry-level Yang-style Tai Chi course with students of varying skill levels. More knowledgeable students learn Form 16. Beginners learn basic foundational movements until they’re ready to join the more experienced students in Form 16. Course material includes balance and flexibility improvement, movement guidelines applicable to all Tai Chi styles, and Yang style Tai Chi movements, which can be adapted if a participant has physical limitations.

    SHANGHAI RUMMY 
    Shanghai is a card game based on gin rummy and a variation of contract rummy played with 3-8 players. It’s also known as California rummy. The new program welcomes all players or those wishing to learn.

    BINGO

    Grab your cards and get ready to shout “Bingo!” before claiming your prize each Friday. Winning isn’t promised, but having fun is guaranteed.

    MEYER BOOK CLUB
    Members discuss books with a librarian from the Bryan+College Station Public Library System. The book type and librarian facilitator rotate each month. Visit bcslibrary.org/book-clubs for more on book selections.

    BASIC JEWELRY MAKING

    WEARABLE ARTS 
    The Brazos Valley Wearable Arts Organization aims to enhance our abilities in the field of wearable art by providing a forum for members to learn, critique and share ideas with each other in an informal setting. We also bring in outside experts to expand our knowledge of the field and to provide an outlet for the members. We have monthly meetings with planned programs. Visitors are welcome.

    The group addresses the needs of older adults in College Station and offers program and activity suggestions to the Parks and Recreation Department. Members must be 55+ and College Station residents. Visitors are welcome.

    BOOK EXCHANGE & SWAP MEET

    Do you have books, DVDs, or other items you no longer want? Bring your items and swap with others. It’s a great time to relax, talk about books, and get rid of the unwanted items. Alcohol and weapons aren’t permitted.

    BEGINNER LINE DANCE WORKSHOP 
    Monthly class designed to teach the basic steps of Beginner Line Dancing. The steps and turns and names of various dances will be taught in a slow paced environment. The purpose of the class is to enable all who attend to be comfortable in participating in other Line Dance classes.

    EXPLORING HISTORY LUNCHEONS • REGISTRATION ENDS FRIDAY BEFORE LUNCHEON
    College Station’s Historic Preservation Committee and Parks and Recreation Department present monthly lectures about our community’s history. Attendance is free, but lunch is $7 per person. Lunch reservations are required by the Friday before the luncheon. Call 979.764.3486 or visit rectrac.cstx.gov or a parks facility to reserve your lunch. Payment is required at registration.
