Second Phase of Church Street Construction to Begin Monday

COLLEGE STATION, TX- Construction of the Church Avenue Rehabilitation Phase II project will begin Monday, May 12, 2008. Phase I, from Wellborn Road to College Main, has been completed.

This second phase of the project will be constructed in two parts to make it easier on motorists. The first of these will close the Church / Nagle intersection for approximately three weeks.

The second phase of construction will close Church Avenue to traffic from College Main to Nagle.

Summer Softball Score Keepers Needed

COLLEGE STATION, TX - City of College Station Parks and Recreation Department is hosting various tournaments throughout the summer for both adult and youth softball. Score keepers are needed for each of the tournaments on; June 13-15, June 21-22, August 1-3, and August 22-23.

Requirements include: knowledge of softball, fast pitch and slow pitch, how to keep score, and experience is a plus. Scorekeepers will be required to work outdoors in the summer heat and will be paid $12 per game.

TEMPORARY STREET CLOSURE AT GLENHAVEN AND DOMINIK

TEMPORARY STREET CLOSURE AT GLENHAVEN AND DOMINIK

COLLEGE STATION, TX-The installation of a median on Glenhaven at Dominik Drive will begin on Monday May 12, 2008 and extends from Lynx Cove to Dominik Dr. It will require that section to be completely closed for approximately two weeks. Detour routes will be posted re-directing traffic from Glenhaven down Francis Drive to Westover and then over to Dominik.

Motorists are advised to carefully observe directions being given in the work zones and to be very attentive to heavy trucks and equipment moving in and out of the zones. Caution should be observed at all times.

This is a project of College Station�s Street and Drainage Maintenance Divisions and Acklam Construction Company. Questions regarding the this project m may be forwarded to the Public Works Department at 764-3690.

College Station Departments Team Up to Beautify W. D. Fitch Parkway

COLLEGE STATION, TX- The College Station Utilities and Parks & Recreation Departments have teamed up to do some landscape enhancement to the very visible utility easement area along both sides of Wm. Fitch Parkway from Lakeway Drive to Pebble Creek Drive. The Utilities Department provided the funding and the Parks & Recreation Department assisted with the landscape design and proposal.

When asked why the utilities department would fund a landscape project, David Massey, Director of Electric Utilities explained, �College Station Utilities receives power from many types of electric generation plants throughout Texas. CSU recognizes the need to reduce carbon emissions from sources such as generation plants. Even though CSU has no direct ownership of generation at the present time, we recognize the importance of funding green initiatives in College Station such as the planting of trees along W.D. Fitch. Tree planting is a recognized way of reducing air pollution locally and, combined with other programs, on a regional level."

Due to restrictions and other utility obstructions, most of the 194 units of plant material will be low growing natives such as Texas Mountain Laurel, Yaupon, Desert Willow, Crepe Myrtle, and Redbud. Plantings, though small upon installation, are expected to reach 20-22 feet in height and offer a spectacular display of purple, red, lavender and pink colors when fully grown.

�A green and colorful College Station is a healthy College Station that welcomes the partnering of city departments in their combined beautification efforts,� stated Tony Cisneros, Parks & Recreation Director. As a city, we are always looking for new and varied ways to help improve our curb appeal as well as the driving conditions for our residents and visitors to College Station. This project is a direct result of that successful partnership."

Texas Landscape Creations received the bid to complete the work at a cost of $43,288. The project is expected to begin by the middle of May and be completed by early July to avoid the extreme heat of August.

The Fabulous Thunderbirds Entertain at May 10 Starlight Concert

Jack fm Radio Offers Trip to Rock �n Roll Hall of Fame

COLLEGE STATION, TX- The Fabulous Thunderbirds will be featured at the Starlight Music Series concert Saturday evening, May 10, at Wolf Pen Creek Amphitheater. Admission is free and gates open at 6 pm.

For over 30 years, The Fabulous Thunderbirds have been the quintessential American band. The group's distinctive sound, influenced by a diversity of musical styles has become a unique musical hybrid. Co-founder Kim Wilson, the sole original member, still spearheads the group as it evolves into its newest incarnation.

�We started as a straight blues band", vocalist and harmonica player Wilson says. "We now incorporate a mixture of a lot of different styles. We're an American music band and we're much higher energy than we were before."

Special guest band is The Band of Heathens who won �Best New Band� in the 2006-2007 Austin Music Awards. The Band of Heathens fits the moniker of �new band�. Following years of performing as solo artists and sidemen, about a year ago, the group started playing shows together on Wednesday nights at Momo�s in Austin, Texas.

College Station Receives Governor�s Advisory Physical Fitness Grant

COLLEGE STATION, TX- Mayor Ben White and the City of College Station have been notified by Governor Rick Perry that College Station has been awarded a Governor�s Advisory Council on Physical Fitness grant in the amount of $23,280 for the development and implementation of wellness and fitness programs in College Station.

College Station currently has over 98 miles of bike lanes, paths and routes and has been recognized as a Bicycle Friendly Community by the League of American Bicyclists. It has a current Bicycle and Pedestrian Master Plan, operates over fifty separate leisure programs and works with approximately 130 outside agencies to provide the current facilities and opportunities for its citizens. It has also partnered with the Brazos Valley Obesity Prevention Network through the Texas A&M University Health Science Center and School of Rural Public Health.

With this grant funding the Mayor�s Council on Physical Fitness, consisting of approximately 15 citizen members supported by city staff liaisons, will be appointed. Their goal will be to evaluate community�s current and potential fitness resources. Upon final collection and assessment of data, the Mayor�s Council on Physical Fitness will assist the city and its community partners in developing and overseeing an ongoing plan for physical fitness and an annual fitness campaign.
