Ask Randie: BVSWMA’s recycling raccoon gets e-mail access
Online resource makes being Earth-friendly fun for kids

Most kids want to help save our planet, but they’re not always sure how. Now, when kids have questions about composting, waste reduction, hazardous waste or recycling, they can e-mail Randie the Recycling Raccoon at randieraccoon@gmail.com.

Randie is the Brazos Valley Solid Waste Management Agency (BVSWMA) ambassador to local schools and youth groups, teaching ways to help save our environment.

Randie recommends Fun 4 Kidz page

At the new Fun 4 Kidz Web page, kids can learn more about reducing waste through composting and recycling, as well as about the harmful things that shouldn’t be flushed down drains. Interactive games and activities, art-making projects and a virtual tour of the BVSWMA landfill also are available.

Randie also teaches children how to read labels, how to look for warnings on how these items should be stored, and what may be toxic or poisonous at home. The Backyard Conservation section teaches composting and how to build a compost pile, and kids are introduced to The Five Rs: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Re-buy and Rot.

Worms do the work!

Classroom Composting and Vermi-Composting (composting with worms) teaches nature’s recycling system, and includes a hands-on activity for kids building a worm bin or compost pile, and a recycling exercise where kids separate what they think can be recycled or composted.

These new waste reduction educational programs are being offered by BVSWMA and are designed for use in public and private schools. Teachers interested in scheduling a presentation should contact Shelia McQueen at 979.764.3806 or at smcqueen@cstx.gov.
