Couple is the first to tie the knot at the College Station Municipal Court

College Station, TX—Wedding bells rang this week at the College Station Municipal Court as Judge Ed Spillane presided over the city’s first marriage ceremony.

Kandice Tyler, 28, and Eddie Benavidez, 29, both of Bryan, became the first couple in the city’s history to say "I do" at the College Station Court.

In September, the Texas Legislature passed a bill allowing municipal court judges to perform wedding ceremonies.

“I’m really happy that, as a municipal court judge, I can perform marriages—and it was an honor to marry the Benavidezes in our court’s first wedding,” said Judge Ed Spillane. “I can’t think of a happier event to occur in our court.”

Couples interested in getting hitched at the College Station Municipal Court should first register for a license with the Brazos County Clerk’s Office. But after the required 72-hour waiting period, a ceremony may be scheduled with the city’s court. To schedule a wedding with the College Station Municipal Court, couples may contact Judge Ed Spillane directly at (979) 764-3850.

The in-court weddings are performed at no cost.
