What is Traffic Engineering?
The Traffic Engineering Handbook 5th Edition, defines traffic engineering as "that phase of transportation engineering which deals with the planning, design, and operations of roads, streets, highways..." and states that "the objective of traffic engineering is to provide for the safe, rapid, comfortable, efficient, convenient, and environmentally compatible movement of people, goods, and services."
The Public Works Department strives to achieve these objectives in the planning, design, and operation of our roadways. An important part of this is the effective communication with the public about the transportation system. In order to improve the lines of communication, please use the links on the referring web page to learn more about traffic engineering and let us know what we can do to help.
