Each year, in conjunction with National Fire Prevention Week, a grateful Nation honors its fallen fire heroes. The National Fallen Firefighters Foundation
coordinates a Memorial Weekend at the National Fire Academy in Emmitsburg, MD, that brings survivors of fallen firefighters together with members of the fire service community. During this weekend, thousands gather to remember America’s bravest and to support their families.
The College Station Fire Department will host a local Fallen Firefighters Memorial Ceremony on Monday, Sept. 30 at 12 p.m. at Fire Station 6, located at 610 University Drive East. This year’s ceremony will recognize local volunteer firefighter William Richard “Dick” Danes, Precinct 3 VFD, along with five other Texas firefighters who died in the line of duty in 2012.
All local emergency responders and the public are invited to attend and join us in honoring our fallen brothers. Refreshments will be provided after the ceremony. Limited parking is available at Station 6. There is additional parking across University Drive East at the Chimney Hill Center or the old Albertsons store location. Some parking is available across Tarrow, but please park south of Golden Corral.
This year, 2013, has been devastating for the Texas fire service with more than three times the firefighter fatalities that occurred in 2012 already, including our brothers from the Bryan Fire Department, the tragedy in West, and from the Houston and Dallas fire departments, along with others. These Texas firefighters will be honored at next year’s ceremonies.
