Mayor's Council on Physical Fitness

The City of College Station and the Mayors Council on Physical Fitness (MCPF) is kicking off a new six-month long program of physical fitness awareness and participation. This program will allow College Station to integrate and develop activities to promote an understanding of the benefits of a healthy lifestyle.

In March of 2008 the City applied to the Governor’s Advisory Council on Physical Fitness for a grant to develop a Mayor’s Council on Physical Fitness (MCPF) and was endorsed in June 2008.

The MCPF will allow College Station to interact to an even greater degree with our health and fitness community. The MCPF plans to host a community contest to develop a slogan, host a walking health fair, running/walking rallies, and will also ally itself with the Get Fit Texas Program. Check back for updates on these activities soon.

The MCPF includes members of the health and wellness community in our area including:

  • Larry Isham, Aerofit Health and Activity Center
  • Larry Rodgers, College Station Medical Center
  • Gary Ellis, Texas A&M University
  • Steven Riechman, Texas A&M University
  • Cliff Latham, Private Fitness Trainer
  • Laurie Peacher, Private Fitness Trainer
  • Ashley Wilson, Texas A&M Health Science Center

WEEKLY RUN/WALKS

Which College Station neighborhood is the most physically active? We might find out soon, thanks to the College Station Mayor’s Council on Physical Fitness launching a weekly neighborhood challenge to encourage residents to get active.

Runs and walks have been moved to Lick Creek Park Saturday mornings at 8 a.m. with the first Saturday run on July 10. The competition will continue weekly through Nov. 4.

Neighborhood vs. Neighborhood
To encourage a friendly competition, households will be asked to sign in at the beginning of each event so they can be counted. A percentage for the entire neighborhood will be determined based on the number of households registered with College Station’s Neighborhood Services. At the end of the series, an average of each neighborhood’s participation will be determined and the highest percentage will be declared the Most-Active Neighborhood in College Station.

If your neighborhood isn’t registered with the City of College Station’s Neighborhood Partnership Program, contact Neighborhood and Community Relations Coordinator Barbara Moore at bmoore@cstx.gov or 979.764.6262.

Upcoming Walks:
The run/walks have been postponed due to heat conditions and will resume later this fall.
