One of the goals of the City of College Station Fire Department is to provide an advanced level of emergency medical care to patients as soon as possible. This level of care begins with the first unit on scene. Each ambulance, engine, and ladder truck has the capability to perform advanced level medical care. The capabilities of these units include early defibrillation, medication administration, IV therapy, advanced airway management, and initial treatment of injuries.

Advanced Life Support
The College Station Fire Department provides medical care to the Mobile Intensive Care Unit (MICU) level. Both ambulances and fire trucks are capable of delivering medical care to this level. The MICU level care is accomplished by providing several advanced level skills in the field.

These advanced life support skills include:
  • Defibrillation
  • Cardioversion
  • Pacing
  • ECG/EKG Interpretation
  • IV Therapy
  • IO (Intraosseous) Access
  • Medication Administration
  • Advanced Airway Management (Intubation)
  • Pneumatic Anti-Shock Garment (PASG/MAST)
  • Chest Decompression

EMS Transport
The College Station Fire Department transports patients to the College Station Medical Center and St. Joseph Regional Health Center. The choice of medical facilities is directed by EMS Treatment Protocols. The decision of which hospital to transport the patient to is based on patient preference, patient condition, and the closeness of the facility.
